Oh no… Dissolvable Plastic...

It exist everywhere in your house

Have you ever seen a family member using detergent pods? Yes, the one that looks like candy. Or you might have seen the dishwasher detergent. Some people complain the wrap sticks to clothing and is hard to get rid of. But have you ever wondered what the wrap is made of?

The wrap is made with PVA which is petroleum-derived. Another word for this material is dissolvable plastic. If you see Polyvinyl Alcohol in the ingredients, that is the PVA. You might also find this in laundry detergent sheets as well.

So it melts! What’s wrong with that? Well, it’s broken down into very small particles just like microplastic. Maybe we can call this nanoplastic. And those plastics, unless they are in specific conditions in a certain facility, almost never biodegrade by microorganisms.

Why do laws allow things like this based on human perspective whether things are safe for the ecosystem or not. Some microplastics which humans can see, people are working hard to remove from the ocean. But with dissolvable plastic, there is no hope.

Here is the interesting news we found from Plastic Oceans International:

July 23, 2021 – Malibu, CA – A recent study by Plastic Oceans International and Arizona State University, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, reveals that detergent pods are contributing to the plastic pollution problem, leaking large amounts of untreated PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) into the environment, and possibly into the human food chain….

These products are not fully capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms, and thus they cannot naturally return to the environment….

It turns out over eight thousand tons of PVA go into the environment every year, originating from these detergent pods. Think about the food chain, eventually it will come to you. Maybe without knowing it we are already ingesting those plastics everyday.

This is a new study but it's not looking good. I would think it's common sense that Poly-anything is plastic which is 100% bad for the environment. Common sense!

Again, sadly, blaming those companies doesn’t do anything since it is legal to produce those products. But we can change behavior as consumers. We can choose a product which is better for the environment. So, what are the best options? We found an eco-friendly cleaning product company you can try out.
