Sustainable Brands We Can Use Today!

You can easily find sustainable brands near you!

After you read the previous articles, Oh, No...Dissolvable Plastic... and Microplastics Are in Your Detergent, Dish Soap and Toothpaste, you are hopefully thinking about moving towards a more sustainable life.

After we wrote an article about Loop, an ecosystem platform made by Terracycle, My sister and I wanted to research whether we could find non-plastic or reusable items close to where we live. So we went to supermarkets and retail stores to research what we could find near us.

Amazingly we found far more sustainable products than we had only a couple months earlier! I would like to introduce some of the products we thought were great! And of course, we will update whenever we find great products!

Today, I wanted to introduce some sustainable toothpaste companies. Because most likely you can find plastic-free toothpaste everywhere nowadays and you can use it right away.

At home we use Bite toothpaste which comes in a plastic-free glass bottle and when it runs out, you can order a refill or choose a subscription basis, where they automatically send you more whenever you specify. And they have a kid's toothpaste bite which is not spicy! When I started to learn about environmentally-friendly products, Bite was the only major company selling plastic-free toothpaste (technically toothpaste tablets). But now we can easily find plastic-free tube toothpaste in supermarkets! I would like to introduce some of the popular and “easy to find in stores” products so you can try them out today!

Georganics

Natural oral care made in England. They have everything you need. Toothpaste in a glass jar, toothpaste tablets, toothpaste powder, mouthwash tablets in a glass jar etc… All of their products are fully compostable including the packaging and even the labels are printed with vegetable ink! They also sell toothbrushes with beechwood handles. Once you finish using the toothbrush, you snap the toothbrush heads off and send them back to the company to recycle! You can find this brand in supermarkets of major cities or easily order online!

Davids

This company cares about ingredients! Well, all the companies I list care about ingredients but listen to this: usually major brands of toothpaste have a long list of artificial/synthetic ingredients. Davids uses ingredients that are Naturally Sourced and Naturally Derived. The tubes are made out of aluminum metal and lined with a food grade non-BPA liner. And of course, you can recycle them!

hello toothpaste tablets.

We used to use this company’s toothpaste a while ago which came in a plastic tube. At the time we didn’t know much about plastics and the environmental impact and our mom thought it was the best toothpaste option for kids at that time. But when we saw their plastic-free toothpaste tablets (especially the watermelon flavor!) we were so thrilled. Because if big companies like hello started to contribute to protecting the environment by making more eco-friendly, plastic-free products, people can easily get started on an eco-friendly life! I still think they need more changes in the rest of the products in order to make an impact countrywide, but I believe this is a good start and we are all looking forward to seeing more eco-friendly products in the future. The only issue about the hello toothpaste tablet was that the tablets are too big for younger kids. You kind of need to bite really hard to break it and wish it was a half of the size.

There are a few other companies you can find online. Also, this is a great gift for your family and friends. I know changing to a new toothpaste from a major brand (which has a long list of artificial/synthetic ingredients) is very hard to do, especially for older people like parents. But I promise that this will make you feel better and the environment a better place.

To be honest, researching inside the store makes me sad because literally you can find nothing but plastic-packaged products. But one company on the shelf caught my eye! grove.co. All of their products were in stainless steel or glass bottles at the store and there are so many options for customers to choose from! They have pretty much every household product and refillable containers which are not plastic. I felt so excited to see this type of product in a major retail chain. The world is moving in the right direction. So far, according to the website, Grove’s customers have prevented over 4.9 million pounds of plastic packaging. Also, the Company aims to become 100% plastic free by 2025. Today, Grove also has 100% carbon-neutral shipping and production facilities and is committed to NetZero carbon emissions by 2030. And yes, we use some of the Grove products.

I’ve noticed that if you look for non-plastic deodorants, lip balms, and cosmetic products, they are available in stores like Sprouts, Wholefoods and even Target. Now, you cannot make any excuses, if you look you can find non plastic products. All you need is to choose eco-friendly products and tell your friends about them!

If some company is reading our blog, I would like to say we are very concerned about the environment and encouraging parents to buy sustainable products. I can affirm that we don’t choose plastic whenever possible. We choose products which are kind to the earth and that affects our future. Every company can learn from the companies I listed. The world is for sure moving towards an eco-friendly life.
